My Storytel reads!

God bless the soul who first got the idea to create audio books! October was a really bad reading month for me. I just ended up reading four books out of which two were audio-books! Had there been no audio-books I would have read barely two books last month. If you are like me.. trying to scourge time for books, audio books are the way to go!

Now getting back to the books I read recently!

  1. The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevado

‘The Poet X’ is the journey of a girl discovering slam poetry as a way to understand the world around her. Really enjoyed hearing this book even though I am not much into slam poetry. Even though I check out these books/articles once in a while, classic poetry is what has my heart.

The most amazing thing about listening to ‘The Poet X’ was the surprise that the audio has been performed by the poetess herself!! This let me experience the exact intended feel of the book! I highly recommend reading this book in audio format!!

2. Nirmala by Munshi Premchand

Nirmala book cover (1928)

‘Nirmala’ is about the life of this 15-yr old girl who is about to get married when something unforeseen happens. It traces her life from then on whilst touching upon other lives. It gives a heart-breaking yet true picture of the position of women in rural India. I don not know what is worse.. the fact that I could relate to the scenes, even though I have always lived in urban India or that it was written back in 1928 and things haven’t really changed much.

I have always wanted to read Hindi literature but I was intimidated to start one as my reading pace would be really slow. It scared me that I would lose interest if I couldn’t read it well enough. Thanks to the audio that problem vanished and I imbibed a piece of literature which is now extremely close to my heart.

3. Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

I picked ‘Of Fire and Stars’ on a whim and honestly this was such a surprise. It is the story of Princess Dennaleia who is born with magic in a kingdom where magic is despised.. She is even betrothed to the Prince of a kingdom where magic is considered horrific! There is she meets Amaranthine, the Prince’s rebellious sister and her world turns upside-down.. This is a beautiful LGBTQ book, especially for the F/F category.. with probably one of the most beautiful last lines ever.. it was simple but it just won me over!

“For the first time in my life, I finally felt free – because some things are more important than a crown.
Saving a kingdom.
Knowing your heart.
Or riding into the sunset with a girl on a red horse.”

And that’s wrap to this post! Hope you all enjoyed it!!
