I wanted to end the year on a happy note and so I picked this seemingly light cutesy romantic read one day in December (pun intended). But boy oh-boy was this anything but light!
“One Day In December” spans over a span of ten years and follows Jack and Laurie’s lives from the moment they laid eyes on each other in a fleeting moment that changed everything. I went into the book knowing absolutely nothing.. just based on the fact that the cover gave me very Christmas-y feels! And that I feel was the best way to go into this book.
It was full of twist and turns, oohs and ahhs, sorrow and joy, grief and celebration. It was a bundle of emotions wrapped beautifully for the reader to enjoy the ride. Given the span of the story, sore other important characters appeared later. The changing dynamics and the effect of each of their lives on the others was effortlessly portrayed. One of the characters, Oscar is going to stay back with me for a while.. I could identify with him in a lot of ways.. To know who he was.. read the book! 😛
Apart from the very obvious love story, it is also a tale of a beautiful friendship between Laurie and Sarah. Their relationship was absolutely heartwarming. The relationship built between any two people when you have been through a lot together. it binds you in an unsaid way.. a bond that your heart cannot break off. *teary eyes*
Even though I was happy with the ending and it was the ending the characters deserved there were a few things that kept me from enjoying the ending fully. It was a harsh reminder that even in stories not everything is perfect but some things are and that is what makes life worth living. You can lose the thing you hold dearest for barely a fault of your own.
It was a tad bit long for a romance but all that happens probably couldn’t have been fit in lesser pages! Jack and Laurie’s story is worth a read for all romantics out there.
Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story.
Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.
Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.
What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness. (Source: Goodreads)
